BMX Hub Guards
Understanding BMX Hub Guards
Hub guards are essential for preventing damage to BMX hubs and spokes. These cone-shaped caps are positioned on the exterior of the front or back hub at the wheel's centre. As riders perform grinds on rails and ledges, the hub guards serve as a protective barrier for the wheel. Additionally, they help decrease friction, allowing for smoother and longer grinds.
When selecting a hub guard, it’s crucial to determine the type you need. Front hub guards are designed for a 10 mm axle, while rear hub guards fit a 14 mm axle. There's also a distinction between drive side hub guards and non-drive side hub guards. Drive side guards feature a cut-out section that facilitates chain movement around the driver without snagging.
Universal Hub Guards and Their Composition
You’ll notice that some manufacturers provide universal hub guards. As the name suggests, these guards fit most configurations and don't need to be specific to any brand. They are available for both front and rear applications.
BMX hub guards are produced in various materials, with nylon and aluminium being the two most prevalent. Nylon hub guards offer a smoother grind compared to their aluminium counterparts. Conversely, aluminium hub guards are more robust. Regardless of your choice, using a guard while grinding ensures a smoother experience.
