Axles for Inline Skates
When is it Time to Replace My Inline Skate Axles?
While inline skate axles are built to be tough, eventually they will need replacement. The most usual issue with inline skate axles is breakage, where they can snap into two. Another common problem involves wear in the threading, which can result from frequent swapping of bearings and wheels.
Fortunately, replacing inliner axles is an inexpensive solution. This affordability encourages skaters to swap out all axles when one breaks. There is also an option to purchase individual inline skate axles, which suits the needs of some skaters.
Leading skating brands advise replacing axles and screws with each wheel change, though this isn’t mandatory unless there is visible wear on parts contacting wheel spacers. Typically, a set of inline skate axles can last through a few sets of wheels.
What Dimensions Do Inliner Axles Have?
Most recent wheels and frames accommodate 6 mm or 8 mm inline skate axles. Older models use 7 mm axles, requiring special bearings with a 7 mm inner diameter. Ensure you understand the specifications of your frames and wheels before purchasing new inline skate axles to guarantee correct sizing.
Methods to Unstick a Stuck Axle
If you encounter a stuck axle in your skate frame, don't be overly concerned. This is common, particularly among novice skaters who over-tighten inliner axles out of fear of losing the axle or wheel during use.
To free stuck axles, apply some lubricant and let it sit overnight. Should the axles remain stuck, consider trying the following method.
Use a hacksaw to create a flat notch in the screw head. Once the slot is adequate, take a flathead screwdriver to release the axle. If it’s still not budging, it's time to employ a more forceful approach.
You’ll need to drill it out using an electronic drill with a bit approximately the size of the screw head. Gradually drill until the screw head detaches. This should allow the axle to be pushed through. Caution: Avoid damaging the frame during this process.
