BMX Frames
Understanding BMX Frames
The BMX bike frame is the largest and priciest component of your BMX collection. It significantly affects how you ride and advance as a rider. Both freestyle and racing BMX frames feature the classic diamond design, but race frames are generally longer to offer enhanced stability.
For freestyle BMX bike frames, the aim is to have a robust, strong frame capable of handling hard impacts. For this reason, they are typically crafted from steel. On the other hand, race frames are designed to be as lightweight as possible, usually made from aluminum.
How to Choose the Right BMX Frame Size
Frames come in a variety of sizes. The best size for you is a personal choice, though generally, taller riders should opt for larger frames.
Frame sizes are usually gauged by the top tube’s length and are expressed in inches for freestyle frames. While selecting race BMX frames, you will find them categorized by “frame names” beginning from Mini up to Pro XXXXL.
Apart from the top tube length, another factor to consider is the headtube angle, as it influences the bike’s overall feel. A steeper angle brings the front wheel closer, facilitating front-end tricks. A more relaxed angle places the wheel further away, providing greater control at higher speeds. If you're unsure about your preference, the industry standard angle between 74° and 76° offers a balanced option.
Exploring the BMX Chainstay
The BMX chainstay is the distance from the centre of the bottom bracket to the centre of the rear axle. The rear axle may be fully inserted in the rear dropout (slammed, the shortest chainstay) or positioned towards the middle of the dropout (centre). The chainstay is a crucial part of your frame and affects the bike's handling. Typical chainstay lengths range from 12 to 14 inches.
Park and street riders often prefer a shorter chainstay for a more responsive setup, aiding quick spins and sharp turns. Conversely, trail riders favour a longer rear end, as it affords greater stability and control.
