BMX Handlebars
Essential Information About BMX Handlebars
For BMX bikes, having the right handlebars is crucial for maintaining control. Typically constructed from 4130 Chromoly, aluminium, or high tensile steel, these bars are designed to be robust and long-lasting. Many undergo heat-treatment, further reinforcing their strength.
You can find BMX bars in two main types: two-piece and four-piece. Two-piece bars consist of a pair of tubes, with one bent into the main bar while the other stabilizes the "U" by crossing between the handles. Four-piece bars, on the other hand, feature two main bars that stand vertically opposite, connected by two crossbars. The choice of type largely reflects personal style, having minimal effect on your riding experience.
Measurement Criteria for BMX Handlebars
When selecting any BMX bar, consider these four factors: rise, width, upsweep, and backsweep. The upsweep describes the angle at which the handles tilt upwards, while the backsweep pertains to how the bars bend backward from the centre. These attributes are more about personal choice as they have little impact on how the bike feels. The rise measures the bar’s height, from its lowest point to the highest. The width is determined from end to end of the bar, typically ranging from around 27 to 31 inches. Let’s explore some straightforward guidelines to select the ideal bar.
Determining the Appropriate Size for BMX Handlebars
The rise, or height, of your handlebar, is mostly dependent on personal preference, though taller riders often lean towards higher bars for added comfort, reducing the need to hunch. Refer to our Handlebars Size Chart to better understand the suitable height for you.
For the width, it's advisable to choose a bar aligning with your shoulder width. A slightly broader bar can offer enhanced stability, though some opt for narrower bars for increased knee clearance during rides.
