BMX Tires
Understanding BMX Tyres
To truly enjoy your BMX experience, having a durable pair of tyres is essential. The correct tyres can boost your confidence, aiding in your growth and progression as a rider, no matter your discipline. In the freestyle community, tyres are available in a myriad of colours and designs, making them an excellent choice for personalizing your setup and making a statement.
Tyre pressure varies depending on the model. Always consult the recommended PSI for your specific tyres, which can usually be found in the product description or printed on the tyre's sidewall.
BMX tyres are available as either foldable or non-foldable. While foldable tyres are lightweight and often crafted from exceptionally strong Kevlar, they tend to be pricier than their non-foldable counterparts.
What Makes BMX Tyres Unique?
In addition to being smaller, BMX tyres have several distinguishing features compared to other bike tyres. They are typically wider than road bike tyres, enhancing grip and providing better cushioning.
The key distinction between freestyle and race BMX tyres is their construction; race tyres are designed to be light and narrow, with a blocky tread pattern tailored for dirt tracks. Freestyle tyres, on the other hand, are made smoother to optimize grip on hard surfaces.
How Do I Choose BMX Tyres?
When selecting BMX tyres, consider the diameter, width, and tread pattern. BMX wheel diameters usually range from 12 to 29 inches, with 20-inch tyres being the standard choice.
Freestyle BMX tyres are recognized for their thickness, typically ranging from 1 to 2.5 inches in width, with approximately 2 inches being the most popular size. This width provides balanced control. Conversely, race tyres are thinner to reduce weight and diminish rolling resistance.
Tread patterns differ per model and should be chosen based on the discipline you engage in. High-profile treads offer increased grip on dirt tracks, gravel paths, and forest trails, while low-profile patterns decrease rolling resistance on asphalt and concrete while still offering sufficient grip for performing tricks.
