BMX Headsets
Explaining the Role of a Headset in a BMX Bike
The headset of a BMX bike is a crucial component that joins the fork to the bike’s frame, enabling the handlebar to rotate smoothly. While the main elements are the BMX headset bearings, the specific parts can differ based on the chosen type of BMX headset. Integrated headsets are the most frequent these days, although there are several high-quality non-integrated options too.
Determining Your BMX Headset Size
Typically, BMX headsets have a size of 1 ⅛ inches, which should correspond with the diameter of the fork steerer tube. Some variations are tapered, combining 1⅛ and 1½ inch caps, and there are race and youth BMX bikes that feature a smaller 1-inch headset tube.
Additional typical components include BMX headset spacers for stack height adjustment, and C rings that position the fork centrally in the headtube.
BMX Integrated Headsets Versus Non-Integrated Headsets
Today's trend sees integrated headsets as a favourite among both race and freestyle BMX athletes. These are so named because their sealed bearings fit directly into the frame’s headtube, making installation straightforward and giving a sleek appearance.
Non-integrated, or standard headsets, utilize separate cups inserted into the headtube to hold the bearings. Typically, this type features unsealed bearings, reducing friction when the handlebar rotates.
Properly Greasing Your BMX Headset
When you replace headsets, it is advisable to apply a generous amount of grease to the new components. Proper greasing ensures that all parts are easier to maintain, clean, and replace.
