BMX Grips
Understanding BMX Grips
To maintain control during biking, BMX grips are installed on the handlebars of your bike. Typically crafted from rubber, the perfect grip is one that is comfortable, durable, and absorbs shocks effectively. Your personal taste plays a crucial role in selecting a grip, with numerous choices of BMX bike grips available, differing in diameter, pattern, flange, and design.
An option you'll encounter is whether to choose flanged or flangeless BMX grips. The flange is a disk-shaped extension on the inner edge of your grip. Opting for a flanged grip is a personal choice but it can offer enhanced control and may safeguard your handlebar. On the flip side, a flange could complicate performing bar spins and other tricks.
Sizing Options for BMX Grips
BMX grips are available in various sizes and styles, typically measuring between 10-25 cm in length. Selecting the correct size depends on your handlebar's length and the coverage you desire. Many BMX handlebar grips are universal, ensuring they fit nearly all handlebars. Nevertheless, it's advisable to verify the compatibility of the grip with your bar's material.
Another aspect to evaluate is the hardness of the grips. Options range from "soft" to "hard." Soft rubber grips offer a more gripping feel but might not be as long-lasting, whereas harder grips are more robust and can endure more use.
Steps to Install and Remove BMX Grips
Although a snug grip gives optimal control, it may complicate removal and installation. Luckily, several methods simplify this process. A simple, non-damaging method uses zip ties and window cleaner (or a similar rapidly evaporating liquid).
To start, insert a few zip ties into the grip to facilitate removal. Spray the grip and handlebar with the window cleaner. Your existing grip should then slide off with ease. Finally, spray the cleaned handlebar area again and slide on your new grip until it fits snugly.
