BMX Sprockets
What Role Does a Sprocket Play?
BMX sprockets are essential for propelling a BMX bike forward. They form an integral part of your bike’s drivetrain and significantly influence the riding experience. Available in various colour palettes and designs, sprockets allow you to personalize your bike’s setup.
BMX bike sprockets are typically constructed from either aluminium or steel. Aluminium sprockets offer a superior strength-to-weight ratio, while steel sprockets, although heavier, are more robust and cost-effective. You may also want to add a BMX sprocket guard, particularly if you're an aggressive rider frequently engaged with rails or curbs.
Which Sprocket Size Suits BMX Best?
The ideal sprocket size is determined by your riding style. BMX sprocket sizes correlate to the number of teeth they contain. On a Freestyle BMX bike, front sprockets typically have between 25 and 28 teeth, though this can vary from 16 to 45. Most contemporary freestyle BMX bikes utilize a 25/9 gear ratio.
Adding more teeth to the front sprocket increases the gear ratio, making initial acceleration harder but enabling quicker speeds and more power generation. Racing sprockets feature more teeth, with a 44/16 ratio being favoured by many riders.
