BMX Cranksets
Understanding BMX Cranksets
The cranks on a BMX function as the metal arms linking the bike pedals to the bottom bracket. Freestyle cranksets are crafted for durability, playing a vital role in generating forward movement on a BMX. Unlike race BMX bike cranks that use aluminium or carbon fibre, freestyle cranks are constructed from steel or Chromoly.
Varieties of BMX Cranksets
Freestyle BMX cranksets come in three basic types: 1-piece, 2-piece, and 3-piece. Entry-level bikes and older models often feature 1-piece cranks, which are supported by the bearings. 2-piece cranks require just one crank bolt for installation; they are easy to install and have a spindle integrated into one of the crank arms. The most prevalent crankset style for freestyle BMX bikes is the 3-piece. They may weigh more but offer increased solidity compared to 2-piece cranksets and typically are a bit wider.
Choosing the Right Length for BMX Cranks
BMX crank arms are available in various lengths, from approximately 125mm up to 190mm, though most riders prefer either 170mm or 175mm.
Ultimately, determining the ideal length for your crank arms depends on personal preference, but it significantly impacts your riding. For those aiming for higher speed, longer crank arms are advisable. On the other hand, if you enjoy street riding, shorter arms provide better clearance.
Lastly, ensure that your crankset is compatible with your pedals, and confirm the size of your bottom bracket before you make a purchase.
