BMX Pegs
Understanding the Purpose of BMX Pegs
Essential equipment for any freestyle enthusiast, BMX bike pegs, often referred to as BMX stunt pegs, allow riders to experiment with different tricks. These pegs are fixed onto the wheel axles, enabling up to four on a bike. Commonly used in tricks like rail and ledge grinds, and flatland stunts, BMX pegs are typically associated with freestyle BMX rather than racing or dirt jumps. When selecting pegs, consider the available materials, axle sizes, as well as different lengths and diameters.
Generally, BMX pegs are made to fit the standard 10 mm axle on the front wheel and 14 mm on the rear, but always verify compatibility before purchasing.
Choosing Between Metal and Plastic Pegs
Both metal and plastic pegs have their benefits, which largely depend on your intended usage. Metal pegs are often constructed from steel or aluminum. Steel variants are robust and can handle significant wear, making them suitable for street BMX. Aluminum options offer an excellent balance of strength and lightness.
On the other hand, plastic BMX pegs are favoured by park riders for their smooth glide on metal surfaces. Typically, plastic refers to peg sleeves, although some are entirely plastic. These are light, cost-effective, and simple to replace; however, they are less durable compared to metal bike pegs.
Installing and Detaching BMX Pegs
Fitting and removing pegs is generally straightforward. A socket wrench, deep-well socket, and an Allen key are necessary tools. Start by detaching the washer and axle nut from the axle. Then, position your peg onto the axle, and pass the axle nut through the peg. Use the socket wrench to firmly secure the peg and axle nut. For removal, reverse the procedure and turn the socket wrench in a counterclockwise direction.
Additionally, periodically rotating your pegs can enhance their lifespan.
