Ways to Assemble a Skateboard
In this guide, SkatePro team rider Hjalte demonstrates the steps to construct and assemble a skateboard.
The 8 Steps to Assembling a Skateboard
Necessary tools: A knife and a skate tool (9/16” kingpin socket, 1/2” axle nut socket, 3/8” hardware socket, Phillips screwdriver, and an allen wrench)
- Start with applying the grip tape. Detach the backing from the grip tape to reveal its adhesive side, then carefully align it with the deck, placing it centered. Gradually press down on the grip tape using the paper you removed earlier.
- Cut each corner of the grip tape and scratch the board’s edges with a tool to create a guide for cutting the grip tape. Trim the excess grip tape along this line.
- Rub the sides of the grip tape with the spare grip tape to make the edges more durable.
- Form bolt holes by pushing through the eight spots with a pointed tool (e.g., a thin allen key). Use a Phillips screwdriver to make larger holes from the opposite side of the deck.
- Attach the trucks. Place the bolts through the newly made holes, then secure the trucks by screwing the nuts onto the bolts, tightening them with a skate tool.
- Insert two bearings into each wheel by pressing down with your hands to nest the bearing nearly inside the wheel.
- Secure the wheels onto the trucks and tighten the nuts using a skate tool, ensuring not to over-tighten lest the bearings become damaged.
- Enjoy your ride!
