Cross Country Skis
Which Cross Country Skis Are Right for Me?
Classic Cross Country Skis
These skis are lengthy and slender, featuring a middle section called the kick zone, designed to grip the snow using wax, mohair, or fishscales. They are generally used on groomed tracks, which are only slightly wider than the skis themselves, allowing skiers to glide forward with a walking-like motion. A classic cross-country ski should measure approximately 20-25 cm longer than the skier's overall height.
Skating Cross Country Skis
Shorter than their classic counterparts, skating skis are designed to be more nimble and lightweight. The skating motion involves skiers pushing diagonally on the ski edges to propel forward. These skis only have a glide zone, as the skating action eliminates the need for a kick zone. Skate cross-country skis should have a length that exceeds the skier's height by about 10-15 cm.
Backcountry Cross Country Skis
Heavier and broader than the other types, these skis are suited for seasoned skiers venturing into deeper, ungroomed snow. They often feature steel edges for added durability in rugged conditions. Backcountry cross-country skis should be around 15-25 cm longer than the skier's height.
