Longboard Decks
Choosing the Right Longboard Deck
The deck is an essential component of your setup. Similar to complete longboards, you have a wide variety of deck shapes and sizes to select, including carving, cruiser, downhill, freeride, freestyle, and dancer.
For cruiser decks, typically 3 to 7 layers of maple wood are used - ideal for a smooth cruise and carving. On the other hand, freeride and downhill decks usually consist of 7 to 9 layers.
Considering the materials, maple decks are classic, made by compressing multiple veneers together. Bamboo decks often feature a fiberglass coating, giving them a spring-like quality. The most expensive to manufacture, carbon fibre decks, offer premium quality with their rigidity and lightweight design.
Deciding Between Top Mount and Drop Through Decks
A significant decision is whether to opt for a top mount or a drop through deck.
Drop through decks sit lower to the ground, enhancing stability during rides, and the cut-outs prevent wheel bite when turning. These are excellent for high-speed rides. Conversely, top mount decks are perfectly suited for carving and cruising experiences.
Regardless of the deck type you choose, rest assured that all longboard trucks are compatible.
Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Longboard Deck
A common query is how frequently one should swap out their decks. There isn’t a specific timeline; it greatly depends on your riding frequency and the style. Some decks last several years with consistent use, while others may only last a few months. If you notice cracks and chips, it might be time for a replacement.
There are ways to enhance your deck's longevity. Minimizing exposure to moisture and sunlight is a straightforward method to prevent weakening and potential cracking.
