Figure Skates
Characteristics of figure skates
Specifically crafted for figure skating, these skates typically showcase a finer and more elegant design compared to regular skates. Additionally, figure ice skates include boots with reduced lining and protective layers when compared to conventional skates.
Offering ankle-high boots, the majority of these skates are secured with shoelaces rather than buckles. Modern figure ice skates often utilize synthetic materials like PVC or artificial leather. These materials offer increased strength and reduced weight compared to traditional leather, which is particularly advantageous during figure skating manoeuvres. Ensuring a proper fit is essential, so some individuals opt for custom adjustments to achieve a perfect fit for their skates.
Figure ice skates are equipped with steel blades, slightly curved—a feature noticeable in the skates’ profile. A distinctive attribute of these skates is the presence of toe picks at the blade's front, facilitating better grip for take-offs and jumps. Additionally, the blade's extension beyond the boot’s heel enhances directional stability. Typically available in white or black, white skates are usually worn by female skaters, while black skates are generally chosen by male skaters. However, these skates can also be found in other colours.
How can figure ice skates be used?
While suitable for general ice skating at the rink, these skates are particularly crafted for figure skating. Introduced in the 19th century, when ice skating gained popularity and branched into figure and speed skating, these skates are integral to four figure skating disciplines: Single skating, pair skating, ice dancing, and synchronized figure skating. Winners in these sports are determined through a specialized scoring system.
