Kitesurf Bars
Understanding Kite Bars
A kite bar acts much like a steering wheel while you are kitesurfing. It enables the transfer of energy from the kite to the kitesurfer, allowing you to speed up, slow down, jump, and turn. When discussing a kite control bar, it usually refers to the entire bar and lines setup for kitesurfing.
Kitesurf bars come in two types: 4-line and 5-line. The 4-line system is simpler and more prevalent, with less risk of lines tangling. On the other hand, a 5-line system is more sophisticated and facilitates easier relaunching in lighter wind conditions.
A frequently asked question is whether kite bars are interchangeable among different brands. While not universally true, many times you can match a kite from one brand with a bar from another, especially with 4-line bars.
Selecting the Correct Kite Bar Size
The right bar size is crucial for optimal kiting performance. The width must be appropriate—larger kites need wider bars. A bar that is too small results in slower responsiveness and more challenging control. Typically, bar widths average around 52 cm.
The length of the kitesurf lines is another vital specification. Generally, these lines measure between 20 to 24 metres. Shorter lines mean the kite sits lower and reacts more swiftly and aggressively. Longer lines allow the kite to ascend higher but with reduced reaction speed.
