Cross Country Ski Poles
Varieties of Cross Country Ski Poles
Cross country skiing includes classic, skate, and backcountry techniques, each requiring slightly different poles. From a construction standpoint, poles for classic and skate skiing are identical, though skate skiing necessitates a marginally longer pole. Backcountry poles stand out due to their larger snow baskets that prevent them from sinking in the typically softer snow found in the backcountry.
Determining the Appropriate Length for Cross Country Ski Poles
As previously mentioned, the length of cross country ski poles should align with their intended use. For classic cross country skiing, poles should be about 30 cm shorter than your height, while skating poles should be around 20 cm shorter. Backcountry ski poles typically measure around 35 cm shorter than your height.
Materials Used in Cross Country Poles
The shafts of cross country ski poles are mainly constructed from aluminium or carbon. Aluminium poles offer a durable and budget-friendly option for beginners. Advanced poles incorporate 50% or 100% carbon, appealing to seasoned skiers and racers due to carbon's strength and lightweight nature, which enhances energy efficiency.
Consideration should also be given to the poles' grips and straps. Cork grips provide better insulation against cold compared to plastic ones. Straps come in either a loop design that evenly distributes poling force across the hands or a convenient easy release system.
