Roller Hockey Wheels
Which Roller Hockey Wheels Should I Choose?
It may seem straightforward, but selecting new inline hockey wheels requires that they match the size of your current set. Roller hockey frames frequently have a unique configuration that allows for various wheel sizes on your skate.
To prevent any mix-up, many frames indicate the recommended wheel size. For example, a hi-lo wheel configuration might be displayed as follows: 80-80-76-76. These figures represent the wheel diameter in millimetres. In this configuration, your rear wheels should be 80mm, while the front ones need to be 76mm—commonly, the largest wheels are placed at the rear of the frame.
Choosing Between Indoor and Outdoor Roller Hockey Wheels
You’ll have the best experience in roller hockey with wheels that are tailor-made for either indoor or outdoor use. Indoor hockey skate wheels are softer, generally offering a durometer (wheel hardness) rating from 72A to 76A, which ensures superior grip on smooth indoor surfaces. For outdoor skating, wheels typically have a durometer of 80A and above, to withstand rough, concrete terrains.
Is it possible to use one type of wheel for both environments? Theoretically, yes. Multisurface wheels can accommodate both indoor and outdoor settings and generally possess a durometer of 78A or 80A. Nonetheless, players who frequently switch between outdoor and indoor hockey often prefer having distinct wheel sets for each environment.
